Archive Label date unknown: Kunisada was the most famous and prolific print designer of figures in the nineteenth century. The woman surrounded by fireflies is a courtesan. In the upper right corner of the print are several layers of bedding, called futon. A gift of expensive bedding from a patron enhanced a courtesan's prestige and the bedding was prominently displayed in her room. The seasonal motifs in this print, the fireflies lighting up the room, the nadeshiko flowers growing by a stream on the screen to the left, and the wallpaper decorated wtih maple leaves in the back of the room all imply late summer or early fall.
