Archive Label 2003: Sander was interested in compiling a visual record of the physiognomies of the German people. For this personal project, he took photographs of people from all classes and occupations. In these portraits, the subject’s body is centered in the frame. Although these works are images of specific people, the formulaic method employed by Sander accentuates their similarities rather than their differences.
