"Using the Past to Serve the Present in 20th Century Chinese Painting," Oct-2006, Ai-lian Liu, Asian Art Intern
A leading painter of the Beijing-Tianjin School in the early 20th century, Chen is also known for his seal carving. He followed in the footsteps of his teacher Wu Changshou (1844-1927), employing calligraphic brushwork derived from seal script for his bird-and-flower paintings. The deliberate awkwardness and imperfections in his paintings and seals are meant to suggest unpolished naturalness
and simplicity.
