Exhibition Label: "Forms of Thought," Oct-2014, Kris Ercums In the early 1950s, Sekula created ingenious scratchboards-the exact technique is difficult to determine. These playful compositions, which she referred to as “telephone doodling,” access an automatic or involuntary process not entirely in the control of the conscious mind. In 1951, when asked about her abstract compositions, Sekula explained, “So I stop thinking and just play at telephone doodling with a pencil on paper and forget about wanting to find something new, it’s all a bit alike to me.”
