A peasant woman trundles home from the fields with a load of cut rush reeds on her back. She is slightly bent forward as she follows the watery path of light cast on the ground by the full moon. The artist clearly indicates that the season is autumn. Tufts of susuki (pampas grass) are silhouetted against the twilight sky, and a flaming red maple tree spreads its branches in the foreground. A single line of geese descends from the sky; we can almost imagine their lonely cries piercing the autumn shadows.
