Exhibition Label: "Alberto Vargas: The Esquire Pinups," Sep-2001, Stephen Goddard, Maria Buszek While this woman’s outfit has definite military associations, Vargas still presents her as a passive figure in a wartime dominated by a male military. It wouldn’t be until the 1943 calendar images were published in the magazine nine months later that Vargas would directly associate the Varga Girl with real enlisted women.
