Exhibition Label: "Alberto Vargas: The Esquire Pinups," Sep-2001, Stephen Goddard, Maria Buszek The verse accompanying the published version of this gatefold describes a soldier who, after a phone call to his true love stateside, realizes that he is fighting for her. This concept reappears frequently in subsequent imagery and the accompanying poems. Like the January 1942 calendar image exhibited here, this gatefold was directly inspired by a photograph of actress Carole Lombard, who had died in a plane crash on January 16, 1942.
