Exhibition Label: "Alberto Vargas: The Esquire Pinups," Sep-2001, Stephen Goddard, Maria Buszek As in the Bugle Blowing WAAC gatefold from April 1943, this image of a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps depicts one of the women who enlisted in active military duty. The verse accompaning this gatefold announces: A Merry Xmas to you all! I’m off the join the WAACs And serve the Country that I love Until the Axis cracks! The Axis was the alliance of Germany and Italy, later including Japan and other nations at war with the Allies (the United States, Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and, to a lesser degree, China).
