Exhibition Label: "Alberto Vargas: The Esquire Pinups," Sep-2001, Stephen Goddard, Maria Buszek When the January 1946 gatefold appeared in Esquire, promotional images for the 1946 Varga Calendar appeared reproduced on the flip side. Since the calendar images were finished in time go to press by January 1946 they still appear under the Varga name. The gatefolds, however, were dubbed “The Esquire Girl” after the lawsuit between Vargas and Esquire had started in April 1946.
