Exhibition Label: "American Etchers Abroad, 1880-1939," Apr-2004, Reed Anderson After a lengthy stay in Venice, a city that inspired him to produce some of his most remarkable works, Maclaughlan settled in nearby Asolo in 1909, where he remained until the cataclysm wrought by World War I forced him to flee. He sought temporary refuge in Spain and later in England, where he produced a series of etchings depicting the Cornish landscape; the Spencer’s untitled landscape is surely from this period. In these etchings from the end of MacLaughlan’s career all is light and airy. A sense of peace characterizes the Arcadian landscape in which calm rounded trees are stirred by a gentle wind and the homesteads are separated by the graceful lines of sloping hedgerows, stone walls, and rail fences.
