Originally from Mongolia, Song Nian served as an official in Shandong. In addition to becoming a master painter, he was highly regarded as a calligrapher. Song is said to have preferred a brush made with hairs from chicken feathers.

As exemplified by this work, literati sometimes focused on small vignettes of nature rather than grand vistas. Although modest in conception, this depiction of a waterfall evokes a quiet, reflective mood.
