Born in Daichang, Song devoted himself to learning the painting styles of the four Wang masters. He concentrated on landscape, also studying Song and Yuan painting. Red Trees in the Autumn Mountains is representative of this early period, with its emphasis on careful organization of landscape elements, step by step progression into space, and mild brushwork. Light washes of red and blue color are harmoniously blended with ink to create an aura of autumnal glow.
