Archive Label 2003:
Fans were an integral part of traditional Japanese costume. They provided a cooling breeze on stifling summer days while their painted landscapes, calligraphy, or bird and flower imagery gave pleasure to the owner and his or her companions. The intimate format of a fan often elicits a personal, informal side of the artist that is not always apparent in larger formats. Compare Noguchi Shōhin’s quickly brushed landscape on this fan with her meticulously rendered landscape scroll on the right.
