Archive Label 2003: Inspired by the work of Gertrude Käsebier, Cunningham began making photographs at the beginning of the twentieth century. Like earlier artists, Cunningham includes her materials in her self-portrait. A photographic self-portrait is often obtained by aiming the camera at one’s image in a mirror. Cunningham reveals her methods by including the image of herself with her camera reflected in the broken mirrored surfaces.
