Exhibition Label: “Big Shots: Andy Warhol, Celebrity Culture and the 1980s,” Aug-2009, Susan Earle Street photographer Garry Winogrand portrays a woman in a telephone booth on the streets of New York. Even though Winogrand does not indicate who the woman is, his pictures of women on the street contribute to the celebrity culture ethos of the time, fashioned in large part by Andy Warhol. Winogrand’s street photographs eventually morphed into pictures of exhibition opening parties at the Museum of Modern Art in New York-other places to see and be seen. He captures both subjects in his offhand style.
