Tao was originally from Jiangsu but after moved to Beijing. In his early career he practiced the traditional literati style, particularly imitating the masters of the Song dynasty. Reminiscences of Song paintings can be observed here in the use of axe-cut brushstrokes and the emphasis on towering mountain peaks partially obscured by mist. In keeping with the ideal of living in harmony with nature, literati frequently added fishermen or other rural figures to their landscape paintings. Tao has rendered them in an especially small-scale in order to emphasize the grandeur of the mountains beyond.
