Archive Label: Following the Second World War, fashion photography in mass-marketed magazines enticed women away from the utilitarian clothing appropriate to the workplaces they had occupied while men were at war and rekindled in them a desire for finery. The promotion of women’s fashion fit with the Eisenhower administration’s strategy to maintain full employment: a strong civilian market would replace military production. Women were encouraged to leave their war-time jobs and return home. This would free up jobs for men and help stimulate the economy, with every family needing a car, a refrigerator, a washing machine, and countless other durable goods.
