Khe Sanh, April 1968. In January 1968, the North Vietnamese Army launched a 77-day siege at Khe Sanh, a U.S. Marine bunker near the border of Laos and North Vietnam. With little remaining supplies and constant shelling, Marines relied on Army airlifts to provide provisions and ammunition, developing careful strategies for bringing needed relief to the beleaguered Marines. Burrows’ photograph shows an airlift and a young soldier filling bags with dirt to reinforce a bunker while at Khe Sanh, soldiers lived in dugout shelters.
