Exhibition Label: "Views of Vietnam," Oct-2006, Steve Goddard British photographer Larry Burrows spent nine years in Vietnam working for Life magazine as a combat photographer. Working with both South Vietnamese and U.S. soldiers, Burrows felt a responsibility to record what he saw, developing a great sympathy for the Vietnamese people. Killed in a helicopter attack in 1971 along with four other war photographers, Burrows’ intense documentation of the Vietnam War made its harsh realities visible to an international public. Nui Cay Tri, October 4, 1966. Before its eventual capture, Hill 484 received numerous onslaughts from U.S. ground troops and air support. Burrows presents an intimate view of 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines withdrawing from Hill 484 in preparation for an air attack on North Vietnamese forces currently in control of the hill.
