Archive Label 2003: Dürer made a profound impression on his Antwerp hosts when he visited the Low Countries in 1520-21. The Antwerp stained-glass painter and printmaker, Dirk Vellert, hosted a banquet in Dürer’s honor and they exchanged gifts. Vellert gave Dürer a pigment sample and Dürer presented Vellert with sets of two of his woodcut series: the Apocalypse and the set of six knots. The appearance in Antwerp of both Lucas van Leyden and Dürer was clearly a catalyst for Vellert, who started making prints shortly after their visits.
