Summer Mountains in Clearing Rain reflects the austere personality of Baikan. A native of Sendai, he moved to Edo and studied painting with Tani Buncho, a practitioner of numerous styles. Baikan, interested in a purer literati style, then moved to Nagasaki and became a friend and follower of the Chinese merchant-painter Chiang Chia-p'u. This painting clearly resembles the elaborate landscapes of Chiang. The proficient use of small horizontal accent strokes to enliven the surface of the rocks and the long dry strokes to describe their corporality are elements of the Chinese literati style.
