Looking After: Art and Care in Education Across Kansas

The cottonwood tree often towered above streams and riverbanks on the prairie, calling attention to water sources as people traveled across the land. Sometimes called the “Pioneer Tree of the Prairie,” its presence was often associated with Kansas homesteads, and it became the state tree in 1937.
