As a youth in Nagasaki, Unsen learned the Chinese language and studied continental modes of painting. A true literatus, he lived an unfettered life travelling widely and meeting the most noted scholars and painters of the period. Because of his broad exposure to contemporary painting, Unsen's style is richly varied. River Hermitage in Autumn Mists is a quiet river landscape with low, rounded mountain shapes and horizontally stroked saplings surrounding a small hut. It is perhaps to such a place that Unsen moved in his later years to live as a recluse, passing his days in fishing.
