"American Etchers Abroad, 1880-1939," Apr-2004, Reed Anderson
In 1928-29 Handforth took a brief journey to Morocco, the experience providing him with subjects like "Casablanca Port." In this stylized rendering of an active port, Handforth used the progression of diagonal lines in the large freighters hauling exotic goods, to lead the viewer through the congested harbor to the horizon. People from all walks of life and locales populate the scene, some engaged in daily activities, others like he two male figures in the foreground in a moment of private conversation. Handforth’s drawing is controlled and disciplined. Repetitive lines define and shape forms and the artist’s effective use of plate tone heightens the play of light and dark.
