Archive Label 2003: While it was not uncommon in past centuries for artists to specialize in categories such as still-life painting, portraiture, and history or mythological painting, twentieth-century artists have tended to be more varied in their production. Close is one of the few recent artists to focus his work on a particular genre. He is best known for his gridded, frontal head portraits, in both paintings and prints.
