Exhibition Label: "Inspired by Japan," Mar-2003, Cori Sherman In 1874 Buhot was commissioned to reproduce prints of ten curios from critic Philippe Burty’s private collection of Japanese art, though they were not published until 1883. The title page depicts an assembly of several items of Burty’s, with the dragon vase appearing again as the sole subject of another sheet. The written characters at the left were amateurishly executed by Buhot, who evidently copied the title from a volume of Japanese poetry; Shinsen kyo-ka goju-nin isshu [New Humorous Verse from the 50 Poets]. Buhot was an experimental printmaker, striving for new and varying effects through unconventional methods, pigments, solvents, and antique papers. This series of etchings can be found in several versions and printed on a variety of papers. The Spencer Museum has a complete set printed on gold-speckled Chinese paper, printed with red designs and advertisements for merchants of the Yuishing Shop and Wan-li Shop in Southern China.
