An award winning Kyoto potter, Matsumoto Isami is known for his white-bodied ware with thin, translucent sky-blue glazes inspired by Chinese Song dynasty (960-1279) Ru ware. This vase represents a reworking of the Chinese-derived porcelain tradition, which has paralleled the stoneware tradition in Japan since the 17th century. The vase features Matsumoto's trademark technique of creating elegant low-relief decorations - here, stylized clouds.
