Exhibition Label: "Inspired by Japan," Mar-2003, Cori Sherman One of the less influential aspects of Japonisme to be taken up in Western art circles was the mystical, spiritual factor perceived by some artists. Redon’s Buddhist subject in this lithograph is an apt example of the entrancing Eastern religion taken as the theme, but interpreted visually in the French artist’s own style. Redon was also familiar with the grotesques and macabre elements depicted by Japanese artists. A misshapen giant ghostly head with a single eye was not an unusual motif to find in prints illustrating folk tales and ghost stories. Hokusai’s Manga and series illustrating ghost tales for example, contains some examples very closely corresponding to some of Redon’s more bizarre images.
