Exhibition Label: "American Etchers Abroad, 1880-1939," Apr-2004, Reed Anderson Perhaps best known as the only American painter-and one of three women-to exhibit with the Impressionists in Paris, Mary Cassatt was also an accomplished printmaker. Around 1880 she began to sketch friends and family members in drypoint. "En Déshabillé" is an example of this work. In the print a young women is shown undressing; she turns her head slightly to look over her right shoulder at the intruder-the viewer-who has interrupted this private moment. Open space surrounds the figure, the minimal shading and modeling calling attention to the quality of Cassatt’s line.
