Exhibition Label: Asian Gallery, Spring 2003, Youmi Efurd A painter, calligrapher, and illustrator, Chosui was a famous Ukiyo-e printmaker, specializing in surimono. Chosui was a member of the Osaka Shijō school of artists. Although skulls were seldom depicted by Shijō artists, it was a common subject in Zenga painting. This painting has a similar quality to Zenga, with the painting and inscription providing a visual sermon.
