Archive Label 2003: The Lobmeyr glassworks factory founded by Josepf Lobmeyr (1792-1855) in the 1830s continued in the family through World War II. The delicacy and fine design of this champagne glass illustrates the outstanding glass tradition associated with the Wiener Werkstätte, an Austrian arts and crafts movement. Lobmeyr table glass and art glass designs were celebrated throughout Europe for their quality and style. The gift of this champagne glass and the Lobmeyr pilsner displayed nearby provided the Spencer with fine examples of twentieth-century glassware. These pieces reinforce the museum’s commitment to the continuing development of its twentieth-century glass collection. They also support the museum’s growing collection of twentieth-century design.
