Rookwood Pottery was established by Mrs. Maria Longworth Nichols in Cincinnati, Ohio to produce art pottery that emphasized beauty of form and decoration over function. This enterprise attracted potters and decorators from around the country and the world. Shirayamadani’s presence, from 1887, helped spread the simplicity and natural motifs of Japanese art to American ceramics.
