Armor, a chest, a banner, and rice cakes are arranged for Boys' Day. The Boys' Day Festival on the fifth day of the fifth month traces its beginnings to rural custom during the Tokugawa period. Originally, farmers frightened away insects by means of bright banners and grotesque figures, but these were transformed into representations of samurai warriors in order to evoke their fighting prowess and encourage the martial spirit. Special kinds of rice dishes are traditionally prepared for this day. The print is the right half, lacking text, of a large Shijō style surimono.
