Archive Label 2003: The Nazarenes, a group of German artists who banded together early in the nineteenth century seeking to revive the clarity and piety of earlier Christian art, found inspiration in work by medieval Italian and German artists, among whom they prominently included Dürer. Friederich Overbeck’s engraving of St. Phillipo Neri is painstakingly done in the style of Dürer’s engraving Saint Paul.
