Archive Label 2003: Marshall was born in Atchison, Kansas, a town on the Missouri River border, across from St. Joseph, Missouri. He left to attend college in Manhattan, Kansas, and after graduating with a degree in architecture, accepted positions in Albany, New York, and Washington, D.C., returning to Kansas in 1934 to settle in Topeka. Some family members remained in Atchison for many years, and the artist revisited his birthplace often. Exhibition Label: "Charles Marshall, Artist on Site," Jun-2001, Cori Sherman The Santa Fe railroad depot for Pauline, Kansas, seen in this watercolor drawing was relocated to Topeka's Historic Ware-Meade Park years after Marshall sketched it on site. The artist has a life-long love of trains and stations, painting many and writing articles on railroad history for Kansas publications.
