Archive Label 2003 (version 1): Capitalizing on the eighteenth-century vogue for imported Chinese wares, French artist Jean-Baptiste Pillement created numerous chinoiserie designs that inspired artisans throughout Europe. Among the most delightful of these drawings reproduced as prints are forty-five etchings by Pillement’s wife, Anne Allen, an artist of whom little is known. Allen’s etching, which was printed from two plates inked in several colors and then printed on a heavy white paper, gives an airy and sprightly rendering of Pillement’s design.
