Dan Williams, a photographer and art professor at Ohio Unviersity, was the University of Kansas's Langston Hughes professor during Fall Semester 1992. In a lecture given at the Spencer in conjunction with an exhibition of photographic portraits of African-Americans, Williams suggested that the Museum acquire and display more empowering images of African-Americans. The Spencer purchased from Wiliams two of his photographs and he donated two more, including "Amber Lights."
