Archive Label 2003: Yi Fujiu (Japanese I Fukyu), also known as Yi Hai, is not recorded in pre-modern Chinese sources, and his paintings are known only in Japan. Coming from a merchant background, however, he was educated in literati art as is evident in his surviving works. Between 1720 and 1747, he made a series of business trips to the major Japanese trading port of Nagasaki. This landscape follows closely the style of the Chinese Yuan dynasty artist Ni Zan (1301-1374). The austere composition and the bland brushwork suggest the scholar's self-restraint. Yi Fujiu's farewell poem to a friend, inscribed above the landscape, adds a mood of parting to the painting.
