Exhibition Label: "Art for Kansas: Building the Collection, 1988-1998 (Recent Acquisitions)," Nov-1998, John Pultz and Susan Earle Terry and Sally Sutcliffe have been supporting the Museum through gifts of photography for over a decade. In 1994, these Lawrence residents purchased thiry-five photographs by Louis de Clercq with the intention to give them to the Spencer. This impressive contribution, given over three years, supported the Museum's continuing goal to strengthen the collection of nineteenth-century European photographs. This photograph is from the album titled "Voyage en Orient, 1859-1860," which documents de Clercq's travels in Syria. De Clercq's photographs are calotypes, an early printing process that uses negatives made of photosensitive paper. The paper negatives have been treated with wax to make them more translucent. Other photographs in the Sutcliffe gift include views of French, Spanish, and Middle Eastern villas, monuments, and religious buildings.
