Archive Label 2003: Hester Bateman was the matriarch of a dynasty of silversmiths. Her skillful craftsmanship and business acumen enabled her to flourish in a predominantly masculine trade. Upon her husband’s death, Bateman assumed responsibility of the family silver business. By concentrating on the needs of the new middle classes for fine domestic wares, particularly those associated with tea service, Bateman built one of the most successful silversmith firms in England. These sugar tongs bear the mark of “HB” on the inside arm.
