Exhibition Label: "Windmills to Workshops: Lawrence and the Visual Arts," Jul-2004, Kate Meyer Virginia Randles was one of the founding members of Quilt National, the prime juried exhibition of art quilts in this country. Originally a weaver, Randles turned to making quilts in the 1970s. Fences is considered by many to be her masterpiece. She was inspired to make this quilt by a line in Robert Frost’s poem, “Mending Wall” in which he penned, “Good fences make good neighbors.” But Randles points out that, “Since 1978 my views have changed-the ‘fences’ will have to be taken down-all over the world.” Archive Label: Virginia Randles graduated from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1930s.
