Visible and Divisible America: In Conversation with the 2019–2020 KU Common Book

This photograph is part of a series that Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide produced documenting cholos, or MexicanAmerican gang members in Los Angeles. Iturbide was curious about their knowledge of Mexican history and culture and wanted to illuminate the ways these young men have been marginalized. “Chopper” is slang for an assault rifle, although that kind of weapon is not visible in this image.
