Archive Label 2003: Robert Brawley is a professor in the School of Fine Art at the University of Kansas. He received his M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. Exhibition Label: "Windmills to Workshops: Lawrence and the Visual Arts," Jul-2004, Kate Meyer Robert Brawley, Professor of Art at KU, teaches both painting and drawing classes. In his own work, Brawley has been recognized for his still lives and his intense interest in the human figure, especially heads and hands. Despite Brawley’s personal commitment to realism, as a painting instructor he grants his students freedom to explore a variety of stylistic approaches. In his classes, Brawley emphasizes the skillful use of drawing tools. This lithograph, printed at the Lawrence lithography Workshop, is reflective of Brawley’s own artistic practice, his teaching mission, and his engagement with art historical tradition. Brawley depicts himself physically engaged in the process of art making, surrounded by the tools of his trade-an established convention for portraits of people at work. Brawley’s virtuoso handling situates his self-portrait within the tradition established during the Northern Renaissance.
