Archive Label 2003: Michael Ott was professor of art at the University of Kansas from 1969 until his death in 1996. He received his M.F.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. Exhibition Label: "Windmills to Workshops: Lawrence and the Visual Arts," Jul-2004, Kate Meyer Mike Ott was a member of the KU faculty from 1969 until his death in 1996. Praised for his sense of humor and commitment to teaching, Ott’s best known works consist of tromp l’oeil still-lifes of shirts, executed in vivid watercolor. These shirts often suggest the personality of their absent wearer, or juxtapose pattern, size, and subject matter with humorous and evocative results. This lithograph, produced at the Lawrence lithography Workshop, pairs a T-shirt proclaiming the KU basketball team’s triumphant national championship victory over Oklahoma in 1988 with a brightly colored shirt featuring fireworks.
