These scenes of leisure are copied from popular prints. A nearly identical piece depicting the peasant scene was worked by Elizabeth van Kleeck of New York City and completed in 1805. Van Kleeck's embroidery identifies M.E. and A. Sketchley as her tutors. The Sketchleys, whose origins are unknown, traveled throughout the United States and Canada during the late 18th century and through the first quarter of the 19th century.
