Exhibition Label: "Art for Kansas: Building the Collection, 1988-1998 (Recent Acquisitions)," Nov-1998, John Pultz and Susan Earle When John Szarkowski, director emeritus of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, was Murphy Lecturer in Art History at the University of Kansas in 1994, he recommended that the Spencer acquire Adams's photographs quickly, while they were available Adams reacted to the chemicals used in photography in ways that made darkroom work a health threat. In 1994, he won a MacArthur Fellowship that would support him amply for five years. Szarkowski and others speculated that, freed from financial necessity, Adams would abandon the darkroom, and his prints' subtle tones - as seen in this print from his Summer's Night series - would never by recreated.
