John Taylor Arms spent the first five years of his artistic career learning the medium of etching and experimenting with aquatint, drypoint, and mezzotint. "Somewhere in France" is one of Arms’s early efforts and it exemplifies his interest at that time in accurately rendering the effects of light as it illuminates forms and creates shadows. As this print shows, Arms’ meticulous drawing style was already firmly in place, his lifelong love for detail evident in the crumbling structures lining the road. Early works like this are notable because they include human figures, which would become noticeably absent in later works.
