Venice, with its aging medieval architecture, shimmering water, and vaporous light, captured Arms’s imagination like no other city did. Soon after his arrival, Arms began to scour the city for a doorway worthy of a plate, preferably one that had not been etched before. He settled on the portal to the Palazzo dell’Angelo, which was owned by an antique dealer, because it combined so many features characteristic of Venetian doorways: a fine facade, a decorative balcony, an elaborate grill in the arch, statues of fierce-looking lions on the steps, and a dirty Gothic angel high on the wall above the doorway.
