Chamberlain was known for his unique perceptions of beauty which, according to his wife Narcissa, “he never failed to find in almost any circumstance.” His subject for "A Country Road" was a narrow roadway near St. Firmin in the Île-de-France. It is late afternoon on a summer day; the large trees cast long shadows over the dusty roadbed. The muffled sounds of the horse-drawn cart travel quietly over the dirt road, which leads to a magnificent château in the distance. The velvety lines produced by the drypoint needle are particularly well-suited to rendering the foliage blasted by the bright summer sunlight.
