"American Etchers Abroad, 1880-1939," Apr-2004, Reed Anderson
Dating from Eby’s third trip abroad, "Foggy Morning, Brittany" depicts a small group of locals who have congregated at a stone sea wall, all of them gazing out at the fishing boats either moored or moving about the tranquil harbor. They appear to be waiting for the fog to lift so that they might go about their daily business, as suggested by the man at the far left who balances an oar on his right shoulder. This etching is related to "Early Morning, Brittany" from the same year, which shows a family of fisherman departing for a days work on the sea, all of them burdened by the large wooden oars they balance on their shoulders.
